Food and beverages
I often get asked, “What foods and drinks are good or bad for your voice?” The truth is, some guidelines apply to everyone, but many things are very personal.
You know, the same rule applies here: listen closely to your own body. What are the effects of different drinks and foods on your voice? For example, some people experience throat irritation from spicy foods, while others struggle with acid reflux after drinking too much espresso.
Personally, I’m not a fan of the sauna (even though it has nothing to do with food). It immediately gives me a dry throat, and I end up feeling the effects for a long time afterward.
I’m a big fan of ice cubes and ginger, though!
Sucking on ice cubes is such a smart way to reduce swelling in the glands. The cold works as an anti-inflammatory and helps relieve pain. It’s also great for soothing mild throat irritation or tired vocal cords, as long as you don’t overdo it or let the cold become too intense.
Ginger is amazing! Its anti-inflammatory properties make it ideal for easing throat discomfort. A cup of warm ginger tea with honey is a perfect remedy to calm your throat and aid digestion—and it tastes delicious too!
💡 General tips:
✔Stay hydrated—water is your best friend.
✔Avoid dairy before singing (for most people, it thickens mucus).
✔Minimize caffeine and alcohol, which can be dehydrating.
✔Watch out for acidic foods and drinks if you’re prone to reflux.
Ultimately, listen to your body. What works for one singer might not work for another. Have you noticed anything specific that affects your voice? 😊
