Marky’s career

I had the honor of visiting Mark Lennon at his family house in Venice Beach, where I got to learn more about his band Venice and their remarkable career. Formed in the 1980s, Venice consists of Mark and his brothers Kenny, Pat, and Michael, along with other talented musicians. Their music blends rock, pop, and Americana, known for its rich harmonies that often draw comparisons to The Beach Boys and The Eagles.

Although they never reached mainstream success in the U.S., Venice found huge popularity in the Netherlands. Their heartfelt sound and tight harmonies resonated deeply with Dutch audiences, leading to a loyal fanbase. Over the years, they toured frequently in the country, releasing albums like "Venice" (1990) and "The Art of the Album" (2000), which solidified their standing in the Dutch music scene.

In addition to his work with Venice, Mark has also toured as a backing vocalist for major artists like Cher and Phil Collins, further showcasing his impressive vocal talents and versatility. His live performances, celebrated for their musicianship and vocal prowess, have earned him a strong reputation in the music industry.

Curious about his creative process, I also asked Mark how he writes songs. He explained that songwriting is often a collaborative effort within the band, but it’s also deeply personal. He mentioned how inspiration can strike at any time, whether through a simple melody, a lyric, or an emotional experience.

Despite being a niche act globally, Venice’s unique blend of harmonies and rock has ensured their lasting legacy, particularly in the Netherlands, where their influence remains strong.
