Tension and relaxation

Video 8 of 8 from 'The Basics'. Watch them all from start until finish to earn your bonus points.

Many people experience tension when performing, attending a singing lesson, or even when giving a presentation. Sometimes, it’s simply the result of a long, stressful day at school or work. While you do need some muscle tension to sing, it shouldn’t take over your whole body or become overwhelming.

Too much tension in your body when you sing?
It can block your airflow, strain your vocal cords, and limit your range or control. Singing requires balance: enough muscle engagement to support your breath, but not so much that it creates stiffness. The key is to release unnecessary tension in areas like your neck, shoulders, and jaw. Relaxation lets your voice flow freely, improving both sound and comfort.

Use this video to really feel the difference between tension and relaxation. This exercise is not only beneficial for singers, but also for anyone who occasionally struggles with excess tension in their body.
