Jasper's Job

Jasper Randall is a vocal contractor — a role that doesn't really exist in the same way here in the Netherlands. But during our conversation, I was surprised by how much overlap there is with my own work. Honestly? After talking to him, I almost dare to call myself a vocal contractor too!

Still, there’s a big difference between the music industry in the Netherlands and in Los Angeles. Over there, the opportunities, projects, and sheer amount of talent are on a completely different scale — and Jasper navigates that world effortlessly.

He works as a vocal coach, choir director, composer, and of course, vocal contractor on an incredible range of vocal projects.
In short: he’s far more than just a vocal contractor.
Is there anything this man can’t do?

So, what exactly does a vocal contractor do?

A vocal contractor is the crucial link between music production and the singers. In major film and music projects — think Frozen, Avatar, or La La Land — it’s the vocal contractor who takes charge of assembling, coordinating, and guiding all vocalists and choirs.

They make sure:
✔The right voices are cast to match the musical style and emotion;
✔Singers are scheduled and prepared for rehearsals and recordings;
✔Vocal quality is maintained throughout the entire process;
✔Communication between the director, composer, and vocalists flows smoothly.
✔In many cases, the vocal contractor also coaches the singers — and sometimes even the actors, especially when it comes to lip syncing or teaching non-singers how to perform convincingly, like in La La Land.

You could say a vocal contractor is part vocal director, part project manager — absolutely essential in any production where vocals play a major role.
