Charlotte the teacher
Visiting Vocal Coach Charlotte Small. New York Vibes!
Earlier this year, I had the chance to visit vocal coach Charlotte Small in New York. She teaches at The New School, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, an intensive vocal program that’s comparable to a conservatory. As an international colleague, it was incredibly interesting for me to see how things are done over there!
What stood out right away? We had a lot in common. We both come from a classical background, both played the violin, and both fell in love with jazz. But what interested me the most was her approach to teaching.
Charlotte builds her vocal training on a classical foundation, especially the Bel Canto technique to develop strong, expressive vocal power. If you're not familiar with it: Bel Canto is a classical singing style that requires solid breath support, vocal flexibility, and control. It’s not easy, and definitely not something you have to master in order to be a good singer. But... it can make your voice stronger, richer, and more expressive.
Good to know: most of you sing contemporary or lighter styles, and Bel Canto is absolutely nót a requirement for that. So no pressure to dive into it. But it is fascinating to realize just how many different techniques, and especially vocal styles are out there.
